3 Day Diet

Ok so I've kind of fallen off the wagon. Since I started losing weight 2 years ago I've been going strong. This is the first time I've really took a step backward and ....I've gain 10lbs 0_0. I need to get back into gear. I've decided to try this 3 day diet I came across on the internet. It's a diet that military men and women have been using for years. I asked my Father, who is a veteran, about it and he said yup he knows exactly what it is and yes it works.
 So this is how it works, you follow a food menu for 3 days, after those 3 days you can lose up to 10 lbs. Then you're suppose to take 4 days off then repeat until you've lost your desired amount of weight. I read some great reviews from other people who have done it, so I'm staying positive and trying it out for myself. Fingers crossed hope it works for me. I'll post each day to tell how its going for me.  Here's  the break down:

3 DAY DIET
DAY 1: BREAKFAST--1/2 GRAPEFRUIT, 1 SLICE TOAST,
2 TBS. PEANUT BUTTER, COFFEE OR TEA

LUNCH--1/2 CUP TUNA, 1 SLICE TOAST, COFFEE OR TEA

DINNER--2 SLICES ANY TYPE OF MEAT (ABOUT 3
OZ), 1 CUP GREEN BEANS, 1/2 BANANA, 1 SMALL
APPLE, 1 CUP VANILLA ICE CREAM

DAY 2: BREAKFAST--1 EGG, 1 SLICE TOAST, 1/2 BANANA

LUNCH--1 CUP COTTAGE CHEESE (OR 1 SLICE
CHEDDAR CHEESE), 1 HARD BOILED EGG, 5
SALTINE CRACKERS

DINNER--2 HOT DOGS, (no buns), 1 CUP BROCCOLI,
1/2 CUP CARROTS, 1/2 BANANA, 1/2 CUP VANILLA ICE CREAM

DAY 3: BREAKFAST--5 SALTINE CRACKERS, 1 SLICE CHEDDAR
CHEESE, 1 SMALL APPLE

LUNCH--1 HARD BOILED EGG, 1 SLICE TOAST

DINNER--1 CUP TUNA, 1/2 BANANA, 1 CUP VANILLA ICE CREAM



This is said to be a proven chemical breakdown. Do not substitute or change any thing. Do not use any seasonings beside salt and pepper, if desired. Do this diet for three days. After, you can have 4 days of normal eating but don't over do it. Good luck :)

  2. It doesn't say low fat products so I assume regular, but I'm sure you can use low fat if you'd like. You're not suppose to use anything besides salt and pepper, so yes just plain tuna. I used tuna from a can. I did read somewhere that you could use 2 sugar packets but I seen nothing on cream. Hope that helps.

    2. I have not once said that any of those foods are healthy. In fact, in following post I mention how they aren't.This is just a diet I used to help me jump start back into my usual routine. It did what it was suppose to for me.

    7. It's not just hot dogs it's the healthy no filler and not the cheap ones with all that crap in it just plain beef our turkey hot dogs. I was on it to join the navy it's okay just don't kill yourself and think healthy don't over do the exercise.

  14. You can eat an orange instead of the grape fruit. For everyone substituting just remember your results will vary some since you really aren't suppose to substitute. Either way maybe it can be a jump start for any of you like it was for me to get back or start eating healthier.

      For grapefruit it says to not eat oranges in place instead take 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and mix with a glass of water and drink it.

  16. I try to eat alot healthier then that and I walk to burn extra fat, but Im like you, I've had a bit of a backslide and its bad cause I havent lost near as much as I would like so when I see a diet like this I'm always skeptical but I guess I'll have to take your word for it.

  18. Hey Nala I understand what you mean. When I first read over the menu I questioned some of it too. Hotdogs? Ice cream? But I think
    It's the combination Of the foods and what it does for your body. It was also a lot more food then I was use to eating. It made me eat more times a day as well. So good luck and I really hope it works for you. I know how fusterating it can be but the most important thing to Remember is not to give up. :)

  20. I would say to NOT do this diet if you can't eat the things listed on it. My understanding is that it's not the calories of the diet that works but the foods themselves that cause the chemical breakdown of fat. It says no substitutions for a reason.

    1. no you can't. you can use beef franks and veggies dogs. i'm not a fan of hot dogs either so i tried veggie dogs and I still lost weight. but honestly once they run out, I'm just going to suck it up and eat regular hot dogs because thats what youre supposed to do.

  23. i was actually wondering about the whole hot dog thing. What kind of hot dog? all beef, chicken hot dogs, any particular brand? The peanut butter, can it be almond butter, or 100% pure peanut butter, crunch or smooth? Day 2's "egg" any style of egg? scrambled? hard boiled? soft boiled? Low sodium cottage cheese? how much is a "slice" of cheddar cheese?
    Im sorry if this seems like a ton of questions, but I feel like Im not alone on this.

      •Sunflower seed butter
      •Same measurement of sunflower kernels
      the eggs if not specified can be whatever you like, the cottage cheese doesn't matter, you can substitute it with 2 oz. cheddar cheese, which is the quantity for the "slice" as well.

Ok so I did my research about this diet on WebMD and other wedsites (too many to list) and it said that due to the calorie intake is so low, that it is possible to loose 10lbs in 3 days, however, you can gain it all back and then some of the "off days". Experts say they fear it could be a yo-yo diet if you can't contain yourself on those off days.

    Also, substitutions:
    1) Orange instead of Grapefruit
    2)Tuna instead of cottage cheese (or vice versa)
    3) Frozen yogurt instead of ice cream
    4)Cauliflower instead of Broccoli (or vice versa)
    5) Beef franks, or all beef hot dogs (for those hot dog questions)
    6)Beets instead of carrots
    7)Toast instead of 5 crackers (or vice versa)

    Though people say that this diet is not recommended to do on a regular basis, but just as a quick loss for an upcoming event, or such.
    If you want to loose weight, a proper, higher calorie intake diet with regular exercise is better.

    1. no you don't gain the way back. It is a military diet that was proven for people in the military to cut weight fast and keep it off. It's actually called the 3 day military diet. as long as you are somewhat active then you will be fine. I started riding my bike and doing a few exercises in between the meals and on my off days to burn the calories off.

    2. I think it is funny that it has so many names. About 25-30 years ago, it was given to my mom by the cardiologist and was told it was a 'heart' diet... the purpose was the same: to get weight off fast. Each of the foods is there for a purpose and when you substitute (even changing to low sugar or low fat products) it changes the balance of nutrients; therefore, it changes how much weight comes off.
      It's a great diet and does work--

  25. Thanks for the info on the substitutions. I also looked up the diet on other sites before I did it and the reviews varied from site to site. I know everyones bodies work differently but I personally didn't put back on any of the weight from the diet. of course, a over all healthy diet is best.     1. yes it is recomended, this diet is given to Alot of people when trying to join the military that aren't meeting weight requirements. if you are looking to drop a good amount of weight stick to the diet and excercise regularly, also drink lots of water at room temp, another thing i use to do is instead of 4 days off i did 2 days off until i got to a manageable weight class

  39. I am sure I can look on the internet and find the answers I want to hear. If I want to try the diet, I will find positive feedback, if I think the diet is a bad idea, I will be able to find every negative thing I want.
    I started this diet today, and am excited to see how it goes. I know that everyone has been asking about substitutions. I am going to bug you one more time. I don't drink coffee or tea. So, if I just have water instead, is that going to totally throw off the diet? Just curious if you know. Thanks.

    1. Very ture I found tons of both good and bad opions on this diet. Enough good to try it myself though. as for the tea substituation, I would say you could try it, but I really don't know how it will effect your results good luck though.

  41. Hey I am a college student that has recently gained the dreaded Freshman 15 ! I dont have a place to cook my eggs, I don't have a kitchen only a microwave and a toaster! Is there anything else i could do instead of eggs??

    1. You can cook scrambled eggs in a microwave. It may take some trial & error. Try mixing your eggs in a micowave safe bowl the putting it in and cooking on high for thirty seconds, mixing and then repeating until cooked. Be careful not to over cook. Hope this helped

    1. Ok so I have read not to workout on the 3 days & other places I read it was okay. Personally I did workout. So I say do it if you feel up to it. I think a 1/2 mile should be fine but listen to your body. Good luck!

  43. I have done this diet many times over the years and, I know it as the Cleveland Clinic diet. in fact, you can find it by googling that. it does work. It is not as easy as it sounds, boring foods but, it absolutely will jump start you into losing weight! I lost 40lbs on this diet before!

  47. Hi. I want to try this diet. I am a vegetarian. And I don't eat eggs as well. I got the substitution for tuna - cottage cheese. But, I don't know any substitutions for eggs. Can you please suggest? Also, for meat/chicken - I read the substitution should be quorn fillet/burgers. We do not have Quorn in India. Any other protein rich substitutions, please?   48. I have been in the military for going on 10 years this is NOT a military diet!!!! It is not used or endorsed by the military. It is the "mayo clinic diet" which by the way was never endorsed by the mayo clinic. It is simply a 1000 calorie or less eating plan which works but is not sustainable. Plus if you are only going to eat 1000 calories a day there are a lot healthier and more nutritious thing to eat then ice cream and hot dogs!

  51. I started this diet this am, and im praying it will work.... I have a lot of back issues so the gym is not an option for me. I am a stay at home mom and I tzke online classes.   52. I started off weighing 169 on Tuesday 12/4/12. I started the diet on Wed.12/5/12 I weighed my self today 12/7/2012 The beginning of day 3 163. Can't wait to weight myself tom morning..And then exercising on the 4 days off along with eating way healthier.

  54. This diet just sends your body into starvation mode, you might lose some weight in the first week because you're not consuming as many calories. Women need 2200 calories a day and more if you're active and that number is higher for men. Not to mention following this would lower your metabolism which would just have the opposite effect once you discontinue this diet. The meals that are mentioned does not allow you to consume the nutrients your body needs to function correctly. It's proven that if you consume more smaller meals through out the day (obviously consuming foods other than "junk" foods) rather than 3 large meals a day helps boost your metabolism and may actually help with weight loss especially adding exercise. It's not healthy to lose that much weight in that short amount of time, 1-2 pounds per week is what is recommended. I would suggest people who are concerned about losing weight would check out choosemyplate.gov and go to the Super Tracker link. The website has links for you to create a profile and enter height, weight, physical activity and it will give you how many calories you need and suggest foods to consume and how much to reach your specific nutrient needs. It also allows you to track your foods day by day to see how you're doing which will also allow you to realize what you're consuming, how much you're eating. Watching where you eat and portioning out snacks is a tip as well as opposed to taking a family size bag of chips, crackers etc and doing work or watching TV to help moderate what you're taking in and not overeat without realizing it.   55. I tried this and it was a total FAIL. If you're someone who is already a 4-5 small meal person, this is HELL. Day 1 and 2 lunches and dinners were such LARGE amounts of one food (the cottage cheese, especially), that I was gagging mid-way through. Two hours later, I was STARVING, but no snacking was allowed! I made it through 2 1/2 days a didn't lose a single pound.

    1. It's okay to portion out the amounts throughout the day, instead of eating the amount all at once. For example, I often ate 1/2 apple or 1/2 cottage cheese amount as a snack. :)

  56. I have tried this diet before and it worked wonderfully. I lost 12lbs. I was never starving because throughout the day i drank water and at least 45 mins exercise. Since the holidays are over I am even considering doing it again to bang start my way into getting back on track. Good luck to all of those who wish to try it.

  57. I have done this diet with my boyfriend he has lost almost 20lbs in three weeks and i have lost about 10lbs. He wants to loose way more weight than I do i only wanted to loose 10-15 and he wants at least 25lbs. It works really good as long as you measure out all the stuff like the cups and half cups. It's really important to drink as much water as you can it helps a lot. I think it has worked well so far exercise along with it. There is a facebook page for the three day military diet it tell what you can substitute things out for and stuff like that. Its pretty easy since its only for three days the key is dont eat crap on the four off.

  58. I heard this diet was from the Heart Institute. It was originally for very obese patients who needed surgery fast but could not be put under due to their weight. It is intended for rapid weight loss under emergency situations.
    Having said all that, I know of a couple of people who tried it just to 'jump start' a diet and it worked great!
    I am going to give it a try and see what happens!

Week 1 lost 5lb, Week 2 lost 2lb... but that was because I had over indulged on 2 of 4 days inbetween.... am doing this again this week.... I am doing Slimming World on the 4 days off the diet, am going to stick to this for a few months as I am quite happy with it... I don't substitute anything

  71. I am also on this diet, entering 4th week tomorrow and i amd on it, day 3 is the hardest one. I have dropped from 237lbs to 223-224lbs,thats 13-14 lbs I have lost. i am aiming for 190lbs and then I will try to maintain it at that weight range. It works guys

  72. I really like this diet. I have switched a couple of things here and there. Instead of hot dogs I have fresh salmon filet baked in the oven. I am not big fan of ice cream so i will have fresh fruit. Also I workout every day and have added a protein shake after my workout. (i cup of almond milk (36 cal) with scoop of protein powder.) I have lost some weight but plateaued for the past couple of weeks even though my diet was clean. I dropped 5 pounds on my first round. With my protein shake I will have on average 1200 cal witch is fine. I am at 174 lb now. On my way to losing my 40lb of baby weight. :)
